OFFICIALS ANNOUNCE HOLIDAY STOP-DWI ENFORCEMENT CRACKDOWN
Saturation Patrols and Checkpoints Are Final Heightened Effort For 2008

Commissioner David J. Swarts of the Department of Motor Vehicles and Chair of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC); Harry J. Corbitt, Superintendent of the State Police; John P. Grebert, Executive Director of the State Association of Chiefs of Police; Peter R. Kehoe, Executive Director of the State Sheriffs' Association; and James May, Chairman of the New York State STOP-DWI Association, today announced the latest statewide holiday STOP-DWI enforcement crackdown. The crackdown coincides with the holiday period from November 21, 2008 to January 1, 2009 and is the last of the six heightened enforcement periods throughout the year.

DMV COMMISSIONER AND ADVOCATES WARN MOTORISTS OF THE DANGERS OF DROWSY DRIVING
Week of November 10-16 to Focus on Prevention

Commissioner David J. Swarts of the Department of Motor Vehicles and Chair of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) was joined at a press conference today by several community activists and state and federal agencies to mark November 10-16 as Drowsy Driving Prevention Week and to help warn motorists of the dangers of drowsy driving.

FIRST LADY MICHELLE PAIGE PATERSON KICKS OFF STATEWIDE CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
21 Child Car Seat Safety Checks Conducted Statewide on Saturday

New York State First Lady Michelle Paige Paterson was joined by the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC), the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the Department of Health, certified child safety seat technicians and representatives of law enforcement agencies at a child car seat safety check in Albany County to kick off a statewide child passenger safety awareness campaign, "New York's 4 Steps 4 Kids." The event was one of 21 statewide offering free car seat inspections by certified technicians.

18-Day Crackdown Coincides with National Initiative Through Labor Day

David J. Swarts, Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles and Chair of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC); James F. May, Chairman of New York State STOP-DWI Association; Harry J. Corbitt, Superintendent of the State Police; Peter R. Kehoe, Executive Director of the State Sheriffs' Association; John P. Grebert, Executive Director of the State Association of Chiefs of Police; and Donna Kopec, New York Chapter President of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) today announced the latest statewide STOP-DWI enforcement effort. This crackdown coincides with the national initiative called "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest," which runs from August 15-September 2 for the Labor Day holiday.

SEAT BELT COMPLIANCE AT ALL-TIME HIGH
Statewide Usage Rate Increased From 83 Percent To A Record 89 Percent

Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Commissioner and Chair of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) David J. Swarts today announced that the seat belt compliance rate for New York has reached an all-time high. This year's statewide usage rate increased from 83 percent in 2007 to a record 89 percent for 2008.

AGENCIES REMIND DRIVERS, PASSENGERS TO BUCKLE UP
"Buckle Up New York - Click It or Ticket" Enforcement Mobilization Announced

Commissioner David J. Swarts of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and Chair of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee along with Chief of Staff David Kelly of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and New York State Police Superintendent Harry J. Corbitt today reminded motor vehicle drivers and passengers to wear their seat belts. Also, announced today at a press conference at the State Capitol was the upcoming "Buckle Up New York - Click It or Ticket" Enforcement Mobilization from May 19 - June 1, 2008.

Felton, Acting Superintendent of the State Police; John P. Grebert, Executive Director of the Chiefs of Police Association; and Peter R. Kehoe, Executive Director of the New York State Sheriffs Association today announced the latest 2008 STOP-DWI enforcement effort that will take place statewide this weekend. The crackdown is aimed at making sure people are celebrating the St. Patrick's Day holiday wisely and safely.

GOVERNOR SPITZER ANNOUNCES NEARLY $25 MILLION IN HIGHWAY SAFETY GRANTS
Federal Funding Benefits Various Traffic Safety Initiatives

— January 30, 2008

Governor Eliot Spitzer today announced highway safety programs across the state will receive nearly $25 million in grants from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC). The Federal highway safety grants will be distributed among nearly 700 state, local and not-for-profit agencies to conduct various highway and traffic safety initiatives.
